The member area is a semi-private place where I host videos, seminars, talks and whatever else I think might be helpful to people. It’s also a place for me to connect with people who follow my stuff.
Just £2 per month
This small fee helps me cover the running costs of the website. You’ll have access to hours of content about social science, teaching, supervision and career development along with monthly live sessions. Plus, you can suggest topics for future videos.

What’s in the member area?
Doing Research
I want people to feel confident in their abilities to conduct good social scientific research. The videos in this section will help you develop in that direction. Don’t expect simple ‘how to’ guides, I like to go deeper than that so that you can figure out the best ‘how to’ for you.
Teaching, Learning and Supervision
I love teaching and I’m really good at it. This section is about my somewhat unique take on being a good teacher and effectively guiding people’s learning. A lot of what I talk about doesn’t align with the official teaching qualifications people might do, but that’s on purpose. I also spend a lot of time thinking about being the best supervisor I can be, so I hope you’ll learn a thing or two about that as well.
Reading, Writing and Thinking
The basic skills needed to become a good academic are useful in almost all areas of life. In this section, I focus on developing these in relation to the daft world of academia, but they can transfer to them to whatever you want to apply them to.
Work–Life Balance
I have a great work-life balance, but from the outside looking in it might not look that way. I have many thoughts on this topic, most of which focus on deeper, underlying issues rather than tips and tricks.
Career Development
I’ve taken a very circuitous path to arrive at where I am in academia. I’m used to having to navigate around, over, and often straight through various roadblocks. I also spent a lot of time thinking about strategic plans which don’t follow the traditional routes that academics unthinkingly follow.
Doing Social Science Virtual Lab
The DSSVL is my monthly seminar/workshop series which aims to help people level up their social science. It’s an informal meeting with lots of room for exploring issues people may be having in their research. In this section, you can see when virtual labs will be taking place alongside previously recorded sessions. Or you can check the events calendar below for upcoming dates.
Academic Chatter
This section is where you’ll find chats between me and my academic friends. Here, we’re able to talk in a more natural way than when we deliver formal content.
Q&A
I get asked lots of questions and I know many of the answers are useful for various people besides the person who asked them. In this section, I answer those questions and sometimes share extra resources and go into a bit more detail. So, feel free to send in your questions and you can sign up to my mailing list below to find out when certain topics will be discussed.
Upcoming Virtual Labs and Q&A Sessions
Throughout term time I host the Doing Social Science Virtual Lab, my seminar/workshop series to help people level up their social science skills.
Membership gives you access to the DSSVL meeting links, and from time to time, live Q&A sessions as well.
