Immersion in action research with Dr. Cathy van Ingen

Cathy is a professor at Brock University in St. Catharines, Canada. In this interview we discuss her work with the ‘Shape Your Life’ programme that uses boxing as a means of dealing with trauma.

I’ve relied on Cathy’s fantastic work in my teaching and publications. To build on this I wanted to explore two main issues with her, which in my opinion aren’t given quite enough space in her publications. (This is a problem connected to word count limitations set by academic journals).

Firstly, how Cathy maintains the scientific basis of her work while acknowledging that it has an ideological basis. And secondly, I wanted Cathy to discuss some of the challenging stories that come from doing 13+ years of conducting research with people who have suffered some form of trauma.

These are two areas I know Cathy can speak to better than most. While it’s always great to catch up with Cathy, this conversation was especially fun as we were able to dig into some issues we both know are really important for young scholars to engage with.
