Getting shit done: Part three

“F* motivation – rely on organisation and execution”. This is the advice I give to my students who tell me they struggle with motivation.

We have to think about small achievable jobs and small rewards instead of some mythical idea about motivation. But when you’re making your plan it’s essential you don’t set yourself up to fail by not planning with enough thought and detail. But also, don’t fall into the trap of being a slave to your plan. If it needs to change, change it.

Be specific with your small jobs, but specific to you e.g. number of words, number of minutes or number of pages. Whatever works for you and your job.
